Thursday the 16th of January was Teachers Day in Thailand, a school holiday giving teachers a day off. This is not to be confused with ‘Wai Kru Day’, which is a day reserved for students to pay their respects to teachers, usually with gifts of flowers.
The passing on of knowledge and wisdom to the next generation is an esteemed occupation in any culture. In Thailand, the word for teacher (kru) is the same Sanskrit word commonly used to refer to a teacher or ‘guru’ of any discipline.
