Building the Innocent Perception Centre
“ It wasn’t until 2007 that I dreamt of having a meditation centre
where I could help people ease off their mental pain through
my knowledge. That dream came true some 12 years after.”Supawan Green
Building The Best Meditation Centre in Bangkok
With the aim of establishing a place where people from all walks of life can learn meditation and mindfulness techniques to improve their lives, Vipassana meditation teacher and author Supawan Green spent decades procuring land and resources to build the Innocent Perception Meditation & Retreat Centre just outside Bangkok in central Thailand (formerly the ‘Bring Your Mental Self Back Home Centre’). As well as hosting meditation courses and retreats, the meditation centre is the headquarters for the Innocent Perception Foundation to help others financially, spiritually and emotionally. Since its opening in 2021, the centre has become internationally renowned as the best meditation center in Thailand to learn practical mindfulness skills built on ancient wisdom for modern lifestyles.
Meditation Centre Inauguration
On Sunday, March 21, 2021, more than 150 students and supporters of Ajarn Supawan Green, gathered in Puttamonthon, Nakhon Pathom (located to the west of Bangkok) to inaugurate an international mindfulness centre. The construction of the centre was made possible thanks to financial and technical support from patrons of Ajarn Supawan’s vocation, including Wisan Ekwanit, the owner of Diamond Cliff Resort & Spa in Phuket, who donated 8.5 million baht towards its construction.
Metta Utakapan, a long-term supporter and CEO of Amarin Printing, expressed her happiness on this joyous occasion. She believes that the official opening of the centre is a testament to Ajarn Supawan’s dedication to spreading the Buddha’s teachings to both Thais and foreigners, and marks a new beginning in her unwavering efforts to promote world peace through the Buddhist practice of Vipassana.
The Meditation Centre
The Innocent Perception Centre is divided into two departments: the Learning Area and the Practical Area.
The Learning Area will help individuals understand how the human mind works and how to combat mental pain. The Practical Area will enable students to practice what they have learned, equipping them with tools to help them through daily life challenges. The center’s focus is on practicing the four foundations of mindfulness, which, when practiced continuously, can solve problems at the source: the mind.
The Practical Area will be split into four rooms: the Massage and Meditation Room, where traditional Thai massage will be adapted to emphasize mindfulness; the Meditative Exercise Room, where physical activities such as Tai Chi, Qi Gong, and Yoga will help cultivate self-awareness and overcome mental turmoil; the Meditative Kitchen, which is the ideal place to practice mindfulness during daily activities such as cooking, cleaning, and washing; the Meditative Living Room, where other activities such as cleaning, sweeping, painting, and talking meditation can be practiced.
Bring Your Mental Self Back Home
I call my mindfulness meditation approach “Bringing Your Mental Self Back Home” (BMSBH), and it serves as the foundation for my teachings. My goal is to provide a sanctuary where people can learn this invaluable life skill and use it as a base to retreat to.
Using the Four Noble Truths framework established by the Buddha more than two thousand years ago, I guide and empower my students to cultivate an inner peace that is closer to home than they realize. My approach is straightforward, effective, and accessible to individuals of all ages.
Forty-three years ago, I purchased a small plot of land just outside Bangkok after completing my university education, not knowing it was meant to be a meditation centre some 40 years after. To design the center, one of my students, who runs an architectural firm called “OWN,” generously offered their assistance and estimated the total cost to be £350,000. Since my work is non-profit, we have raised £275,000 through donations.
The center is a serene location for meditation, with spacious, light-filled rooms that overlook the natural surroundings. Additionally, there is ample space both inside and outside to practice Tai Chi and other activities that I incorporate into my teachings. A kitchen and café are also available for people to engage in mindful cooking and eating.
“The Innocent Perception Centre will become the place where the wisdom of Nirvana will be passed on for many generations to come.”
– Supawan Green
